Co-living with COVID-19

Having braved the frontlines of COVID-19 at the epic-center when it first spread to Singapore, and not being affected by it when everyone else was over the past year, has made me wonder - could I be immune?

Or maybe, I'm Wonder Women!

After supporting telemedicine nursing, I learnt that COVID-19 affects everyone differently; some mild, and others more severe. It would be interesting to see how my body reacts to the virus and perhaps a good time to catch up on my reading. While I began to FOMO on the experience, and got complacent with my "immunity", dad caught the virus last week so we are all infected now.

Dang, I really thought that I'm immune!

Being infected with COVID-19 was brutal

It is perhaps the most deceiving virus my immune system had to contend with. I could wake up feeling playful and go to bed in cold chills. Other times, I could wake up to a horrible cough and go to bed with an excruciating body ache. Jeez, I don't think I've drank this much of TCM in my entire 30 years combined!

Anyways, I am not writing this to bore you with my experience as a COVID survivor.

Here are 3 key takeaways I learnt while fighting COVID-19. Regardless whether you have immunity to the virus or have already succumbed to it, you will definitely benefit from the advice I'm about to share.

Let's go!

#1: You will crave social interaction

In COVID-19, I learned that we all crave that little bit of social interaction to make us feel alive again. I may work in a people-oriented industry, conducting live webinars and face-to-face presentation regularly, but I'm actually an introvert who likes to retreat into my own safe haven. Damn right, I'm an introvert who craves for my daily dose of social interaction. It doesn't matter whether one is an extroverts or introverts, we are born social animals, right?

In spite of the discomfort and inconvenience that COVID has caused, it is fair to say that the virus can also strengthen family bonds. While we were all isolated at home, we spent a great deal of time chilling out and bickering. I must say, it's actually refreshingly fun.

#2: Your eyes will play tricks on you

The most annoying and persistent symptom of all is lethargy. No matter how hard I try to focus and concentrate on my work, I just find myself floating into an abyss somehow. Even a short 1-hour meeting can completely exhaust me. In fact, I think I was barely awake on the second and third day of the infection! I was just so tired!

I have to admit that I am an overachiever who takes pride in my business. My friends call me a workaholic but I really enjoy pushing my limits. Be that as it may, an illness brings out any weakness in one's lifestyle.

Special reminder to myself: Rest is not a luxury I earn when I reach my goals, but a discipline I must cultivate to reach my goals faster.

#3: Tomorrow will be better

Drama has never been something I proudly associate myself with, but even the toughest lady has her vulnerable side too. The truth is, I whine a lot when I am uncomfortable, and maybe my parents are the only people in the world who can tolerate my exaggerations. It's really the small things in life that are often taken for granted, which should be truly appreciated.

Back to the topic of COVID-19, I experience a new set of symptoms every single day. Today, it could have been a high fever, then a terrible cough, stuffy nose and generalised body aches, etc. Nonetheless, I feel more mentally recharged every single day when I wake up. We may be at our rock bottom now, but rest assured that tomorrow will always be better.

This is my sixth day on the road to recovery from COVID.

I'm still positive but well enough to pen down my thoughts (:

Stay strong and fight on!
